The term “isotonic” comes from ancient Greek and roughly translates into “same tension” or “same tone.” So basically, an isotonic movement is a constant movement that will have the same tension or the same ‘weight’. Think about when you life weights. You use the same weight or tension with every movement.
Some other isotonic movements include:
- squats
- pushups
- pullups
- bench presses
- deadlifts
Isotonic exercise can help strengthen and build muscles so that you can move through all types of motion with greater ease. “This type of training is what most people do in the gym and has benefits for preserving strength as we age,” says Smart.
Although many of these types of movements are instinctive, but it is very important that you make sure you’re doing them correctly.
