Last week was overshadowed by the Texas climate crisis. Climate change was one of the most debated issues in the 2020 presidential election. Today we’re seeing the effects of the climate change crisis across the world.
What happened in Texas?
Over the course of some days, some Texans were out of heat and water. Texas had experienced some of coldest winter temperatures. Unfortunately, according to The Washington Post at least 58 people died in lastweek’s frigid weather.
Prior to this winter, Texas had not properly prepared for the frigid weathers that occurred last week. As of today, The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) which manages the state’s electricity grid, says it is unsure when it can restore power to the more than 2 million Texans who are currently without it.
Was it a blackout or was the power turned off?
According to Business Insider, ERCOT actually cut the power off to millions of Texas in order to “limit the time any one household was dark.” As the power was cut off, millions suddenly had no heat during the one of Texas’ coldest temperatures.
While some politicians were calling over 150,000 Texans like legislature Beto O’Rourke, and generating $1 million in donations like legislature Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, politicians like Ted Cruz were taking trips to Cancun. It just goes to show how important your vote really is.
